Global Water Campaign

Global Green USA is the U.S. arm of Green Cross International, founded by President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993. GCI's mission is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity's relationship with nature.

Ruder Finn Global Issues Communications worked with Global Green USA in March 2005 to launch the Global Water Campaign to urge Americans to sign petition for U.N. adoption of a global treaty on the right to water to make the United States and other governments accountable for providing clean water for more than 1.2 billion people in the world who don't have access.

 

 

OBJECTIVES

  • Distinguish the work of Global Green from other environmental organizations in the public's mind.
  • Generate extensive publicity for the launch of the Global Water Campaign in San Francisco.
  • Announce online campaign to generate signatures for water petition urging the United Nations to adopt an enforceable Global Treaty on the Right to Water.

PROGRAM

  • Development of press kit materials that demonstrate Global Green's leadership in clean water rights.
  • Press event management announcing Global Water Campaign on World Water Day in San Francisco.

RESULTS

  • Media attendance at the event included Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Examiner, local ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox affiliates and other major publications.
  • Print media coverage included: The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Magazine, amongst others. Hundreds of newspapers picked-up the AP article, including: USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Times, Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Houston Chronicle.
  • National broadcast coverage included: CNN, ABC, PBS, E! Entertainment, Access Hollywood, Life and Times, amongst others.
  • Regional Broadcast coverage included: WMAR-TV (ABC, Baltimore), WMUR-TV (ABC, Boston), WBBM-TV (CBS, Chicago), WXYZ-TV (ABC, Detroit), (FOX, Las Vegas), KABC-TV (ABC, Los Angeles), WPLG-TV (ABC, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale), KYW-TV (CBS, Philadelphia), WJLA-TV (ABC, Washington, D.C.), KOMO-TV (ABC, Seattle/Tacoma) and other major broadcast outlets.
  • Radio broadcast coverage included: AP Radio, NPR, Environmental News Network (ENN), KPFA-FM 94.1 (San Francisco), KGO Radio and KFOG Radio.
  • Overall there were more than 80 television media hits across the country, in 14 out of the top 15 markets. Print coverage resulted in more than 14.5 million impressions.
